Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: You may have had things done to you so bad you’ve never told anyone what happened. You may have been violated, abused, raped, mistreated. You’ve never told anyone. You’ve just pushed it down and put a lid on it. But the toxic poison is going to leak out. You’ve got to get rid of it at once and for all. The only way to do that is through the blood of Jesus. That’s why Psalm 109 says, « For I am poor and needy and my heart is full of pain. Help me, oh Lord, my God. save me because of your unfailing love. For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them. Nancy Aosta from Houston, Texas, seemed to have a happy and normal life. She was a wife, a mother of three children, and a medical doctor. Everything looked fine on the surface, but there was something dark lurking behind the scenes. Nancy had an unhappy marriage and anger was growing inside her heart. Her husband Freddy was rarely home. Sometimes he stayed away for three or four days at a time. And when he did come home, he would often just stop into the house, take a bath, get fresh clothes, and leave again. Nancy suspected that Freddy was cheating on her with another woman. So on June 15th, 2015, Nancy decided to follow Freddy and spy on him. When he drove off, she got into her car and followed him. And sure enough, she caught Freddy picking up his mistress and driving with her into town. Hey, when NY’s suspicions about Freddy’s cheating were confirmed, something broke inside of her. Nancy became furious. She wanted to make Freddy pay. She was going to get even with him. She was going to punish him. So Nancy drove faster and faster as she chased Freddy and his side chick down the road. And then when she caught up to him, she started to crash her car into his, ramming his car as the two cars raced down the motorway. Nancy was smashing Freddy’s car while Freddy tried to escape. But suddenly Nancy lost control of her car. She left her lane and sped off into the other side of the road, right into the oncoming traffic. Within seconds, she was hit headon by another driver and Nancy Aosta died on the spot. Her anger led her to attack her husband and his girlfriend, but in the end, it was Nancy who paid the price. NY’s rival now sleeps in her bed, lives in her house, and controls her children. And there’s a vital lesson for all of us in the tragic but true story of Nancy Aosta and her anger. It’s natural for any one of us to feel angry when someone hurts us or causes us harm. But when we fail to handle our anger properly, it ends up destroying us. That’s why it’s so important for all of us to understand God’s path out of anger. For no matter what has been done against you, you can find freedom from anger, when you look to the Lord to deliver you. That’s the message in our sermon today. By God’s grace, we’re going to see how Jesus has come to break the bondage of anger. But before we learn more, let’s bow our heads and pray. Almighty and everlasting Father, we thank you that your love, your power, and your grace are greater than every bondage. Jesus, we confess you are our bondage breaker and we come to you today and ask you to break every bondage in our life. Break the bondage of fear and of anger and of sin and deliver us that we might walk in freedom. We submit to you now, Lord. We bind every work of the devil against us. Every lying voice of Satan, I command you to be silent. Every spirit that would disturb or deceive or distract us, go in the name of Jesus. and I loose the power of the Holy Spirit, the power to enlighten our hearts and minds and give us the grace to follow you as we break free from anger. We thank you by faith in Jesus name. And everybody said, « Amen. » I want to invite you to take a moment, join your faith with mine. Put your hand on your chest and pray out loud after me. Lord Jesus, speak to my heart. Change my life. manifest your glory in me in Jesus name. Amen. And amen. Well, hello everyone. God richly bless you for joining me together today as we study God’s word. I’m so thankful to the Lord uh for bringing us all into his presence to grow in our faith and to find freedom in God’s word. For you see, no matter who you are or what problems you may be facing today, we serve an awesome God who loved us. He came to deliver us from every bondage that would hold us captive. He is our bondage breaker. If you believe it, say amen. That’s the truth we’ve been discovering in our current sermon series called bondage breaker. Already we’ve seen that Jesus can deliver us from the bondage of sin and the bondage of fear. And today we continue our series as we learn how Jesus can deliver us from the bondage of anger as well. Now to help us break the bondage of anger, we’re going to study a parable that Jesus taught about a very angry man. It’s found in the Gospel of St. Matthew chapter 18:es 22-35. Now receive the word of the Lord. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. In the process, one of his detors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned to pay the debt. But the man fell down before his master and begged him, « Please be patient with me. I will pay it all. » Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt. But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. « Be patient with me and I will pay it, » he pleaded. But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until he could pay the debt in full. When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened. Then the king called in the man he’d forgiven and said, « You evil servant, I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant just as I had mercy on you? » Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he’d paid his entire debt. That’s what my heavenly father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart. May the Lord bless the reading of his word to your hearts today in Jesus’ name. And everybody said, « Amen. » Before we look at this parable in detail, let’s understand why Jesus taught this story. The Bible says that one day Peter came to him and asked him a question that was bothering him. He said, « Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother when he sins against me? » Now, Peter didn’t ask the Lord whether he had to forgive his brother. He knew he had to forgive. For we all know that God requires us to forgive other people. But Peter was more concerned with the amount of forgiveness. If the offense was particularly grievous or or was repeated over and over, did that give the Peter the right to refuse to forgive and be angry? In response, Jesus told this parable about this angry man. And in this story, he’s teaching Peter and he’s teaching all of us how to break the bondage of anger. So, let’s look at the three steps we need to follow. And here’s your first step. Examine the root of anger. Listen again to verse 28. When the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. And the fact is the angry man had a reason to be angry. The starting point of his anger was the fact that he was owed money. He had a legitimate complaint. And it’s important that we all understand this today. For you see, the path out of anger is not to deny that you’ve been offended. You won’t break free from anger by pretending no one has wronged you. You have to examine the root of why you feel angry and acknowledge uh when wrong was done to you. You may have a legitimate reason to be angry. Someone did you wrong, someone betrayed you, someone cheated you, someone mistreated you, you were hurt. But here’s what you need to understand. You don’t have a choice about whether or not other people will do bad things against you. But you do have a choice regarding how you will respond to the wrong done to you. Will you store it up in an angry root or will you let it go and be free? For whether you like it or not, we’re all going to be offended throughout life. None of us are exempt from being offended. Good people and bad people, rich people and poor people, Americans, Nigerians, Ghanaians and Europeans all have wrongs done against them. Everybody has offenses committed against them. Even Jesus had people treat him wrongly and commit offense against him. That’s why Jesus himself said in Luke 17:1, « It is impossible that no offenses should come. » The fact is people will disappoint you. Sometimes your expectation will exceed your experience cuz we’re all imperfect people. And the fact is imperfect people hurt each other, even those they love. So when your mate makes a mistake, you have two options. You can rub it in or you can rub it out. You can’t avoid all offenses. So you’ve got to decide today, how will I respond? Will I become bitter or will I become better? It’s easy to go through life angry, blaming others, blaming yourself, and even blaming God. But here’s the powerful truth that can set you free. The root of your anger is not what people did to you. The root of your anger is how you reacted to what was done to you. What people did to hurt you was a seed. And a seed may be thrown on your heart, but it does not have to grow. If you do not water that seed, it won’t become a root. And if you don’t nurture that seed, it won’t grow. See, you may be a product of your past, but you don’t have to be a prisoner of your past. For the fact is, I’m not a prisoner. I am a powerhouse. That’s what Paul discovered when he was literally in prison. Listen to his words uh to his spiritual son Timothy written from the dark confines of a Roman prison in 2 Timothy 2:8-9. Always remember, somebody say, always remember that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. This is the good news I preach. From the dark dungeon of prison, Paul recalls the powerful truth of the resurrection of Jesus. He tells Timothy, « Always remember, whether in prison or whether free, whether in good times or whether in trials, for the truth is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is our foundation. It’s what carries us through. For Jesus was beaten and wounded and abused and killed, but he rose again. Death couldn’t keep him. The grave couldn’t hold him. Pilate couldn’t stop him. The Jews couldn’t silence him. No matter what anyone did to him, Jesus overcame. Hallelujah. And that means something for you and me today. Jesus resurrection means that I am not bound uh by what was done to me. I am freed by what Christ did for me. That’s why Paul goes on in verse 9 and says, « Because I preach this good news, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. » Hallelujah. Paul was trained on the outside, but he had the liberating power of God on the inside. Paul knew that the resurrected Christ lived in him. And that meant that nothing could keep him down. Nothing could keep him in chains. And the same thing is true for you and me today. See, I’ve got something inside of me that cannot be chained. It cannot be stopped. I’ve got a power inside of me that brought Jesus Christ back from the dead. And that means that when I walk in the power of God, there is nothing anyone can do to me that can hold me down. That’s why I say with confidence, I am not a prisoner. I’m a powerhouse. I’m not a prisoner to offense. I’m not a prisoner to circumstances. I’m not a prisoner to your opinion of me. I’m not a prisoner to your hatred for me. Cuz they locked Paul up, but they couldn’t shut him up. They bound him in chains, but they couldn’t bind his spirit. Because when you’re in Christ, you’re not a prisoner of your circumstances. You are a powerhouse in the hands of almighty God. Wherever you go, when you maintain the right perspective, you are a powerhouse. You can detain a Christian on the outside, but you cannot detain the destiny of a child of God. And when you believe and put your faith in Christ, not your circumstances, then God can use you mightily no matter what anyone has done to you. That’s why Paul wrote in Philippians 1:12, « And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything, » somebody say everything, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the good news. In prison, Paul wrote epistles. In prison, he witnessed for Christ. In prison, he fulfilled his purpose. Even in prison, he fulfilled a powerful ministry that still continues to us today. So, here’s the truth you need to pack up and take home with you. You can be pitiful or you can be powerful, but you can’t be both. God will not release new opportunities as long as you’re holding on to old offenses. But if you’ll get rid of that negative baggage, you’ll not only feel the heaviness drop off of you, but you’ll step into the new things that God has for you. That’s why Jesus said in Mark 11:25, when you are praying first, everybody say first. First, forgive anyone you’re holding a grudge against so that your father in heaven will forgive your sins, too. The opportunities available to you in prayer will not be realized till you get rid of those offenses holding you back. Being angry and upset over what people did to you will only keep you locked up in chains. Your offender is out drinking and having kebabs. It’s time to drop it and move forward. It’s time to let go and be free. Give it to God and God will be your vindicator. See, you have to understand something today. Just because you have a reason to be angry doesn’t make it right for you to react in anger. That’s what we can learn from the rioting that took place in 2018 at theqaamer and Kruma University here in Ghana in Kumasi. The students felt agrieved. They were angry at the way they were being treated by administrators and security personnel. And the fact is there may indeed have been issues that needed to be addressed. There may have been things that were done to the students that were wrong. The KNUSD students may have had a reason to be angry, but it did not make it right for them to riot and destroy property. And when they rioted, what resulted? The government shut down the school. The students didn’t help themselves, they hurt themselves. The ones who suffered the most were the students who were unable to attend classes. For the fact is when you give vent to your anger, it hurts you more than it hurts anyone else. And that brings us to our second step to break the bondage of anger. Understand the results of anger. Listen to verse 34. The angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. So the angry man thought he would take revenge and punish the man who owed him money. But in the end, it was the angry man who was punished. And that’s the result of anger. When you get angry and seek revenge, you don’t put your enemy in bondage. You put yourself in bondage. Proverbs 26:27 says, « If you set a trap for others, you will get caught in it yourself. » Tell your neighbor he’s talking about you. If you roll a boulder down on others, it will crush you instead. That’s the lesson we learned from what happened on Sunday, April 12th, 2015 in Milwaukee, USA. 2-year-old Demani Terry was at a birthday party when he ran off from his friends. Before anyone could stop him, little Demani ran into the street. An older gentleman named Archie Brown was driving down the speed. He wasn’t speeding. He wasn’t reckless. He was just driving down the street when Demani ran right out in front of his car. Archie slammed on his brakes, but it was too late. Archie’s car, struck Demani, and killed him on the spot. Archie quickly stopped the car, got down, and tried to bring life to the boy. But Deman’s uncle became furious. He was angry at Archie for hitting Demani. And before anyone could stop him, Deman’s uncle pulled a gun and fired repeatedly, killing the driver, Archie Brown. But Archie Brown wasn’t the only one killed. Demani’s older brother, Rasheed, had run out into the street and held little Demani in his arms trying to comfort him. And when Deman’s uncle shot Archie Brown, one of the bullets hit the car, ricocheted off the car, and struck Rashid and killed him. So Demani Terry ran into the street and was hit by a car and killed. In revenge, Demani’s uncle shot the driver. A stray bullet struck Deman’s brother Rasheed and killed him. When the police came to arrest Demani’s uncle for shooting and killing two people, he committed suicide. Four people were dead. One died as a result of an accident. Three died as a result of anger. And in the end, the greatest damage was inflicted on the family of the man who was taking revenge. So here’s the truth you need to pack up and take home with you today. If you don’t deal with anger, anger will deal with you. Proverbs 27:4 says, « Anger is cruel and wrath is like a flood and anger brings a cruel result to your life. What starts as a drop can easily turn into a flood. When you give into anger, it picks up speed and starts to pour into your heart and mind. And in the end, you will pass that anger on to everyone around you. For the truth is, what doesn’t get healed gets handed down. You may think that taking revenge will bring you release. But in the end, it will bring you destruction. When you allow the root of anger to go deep into your life, it will spread to everybody around you, and many others will be affected. That’s why Hebrews 12:15 says, « Look after each other so that none of you fails uh to receive the grace of God. » Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Anger is a seed that leads to a poisonous root of bitterness. And when you plant the seed of anger in your heart, it produces a poisonous root of bitterness that grows up. Anger opens the door to a whole world of evil. The poisonous root creates a poisonous fruit. That’s why Ephesians 4:27 says, « Anger gives a foothold to the devil. » You can bind Satan all you want. If you’ve got anger in your heart, the devil has a foothold in your life. No matter the 24-hour fasting, no matter the midnight prayer, no matter the speaking in tongues, when you have anger in your heart, you gave an open door to Satan. That’s the lesson we can learn from the tragic but true story of a man named Charles Roberts. On October 2nd, 2006, Charles Roberts walked into an Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania, USA. He was armed with three guns and a heart filled with anger and bitterness. He released some of the teachers and students and then he held the remaining 15 young ladies uh with their feet tied together. When the police arrived, Charles started shooting. He killed three children and then he killed himself. What could have led to Charles Roberts to commit such a horrific and random act of violence? No one who knew Charles Roberts could believe he was capable of such a thing. But Charles had a deep secret of anger that had been building inside his heart. In a letter he left for his wife, Charles said he was seeking revenge for something terrible that had happened in his life over 20 years previously. When he was a child, Charles Roberts was angry at life, angry at people, and angry at God. And for 20 years, he allowed that anger to grow. It led to bitterness that spilled out in a tragedy that took his own life and the life of three innocent children. The tragedy at the Amish schoolhouse is a vivid true life example of the destructive nature of anger. It kills the soul. It can kill the body if left unchecked. Anger destroys everything in its path. Yet, surprisingly, this same story is also an example of the healing power of forgiveness. For you see, the families of the children who were murdered by Charles Roberts reacted to their loss in the exact opposite way that Charles had reacted to his own hurt. Rather than becoming bitter, the families of the innocent children he killed decided to forgive. The families of the girls he killed attended his funeral and provided financial support to his widow rather than responding with anger. They responded with the love of God. And that’s the lesson we all need to learn from this story. The fact is when faced with offenses and hurts and betrayals, you have a choice. You can let anger result in death, or you can let love result in forgiveness. You can allow the hurt and hatred to fester and grow until it takes over your life and destroys you. Or you can choose to overcome evil with good. You can choose to turn off fence into an opportunity for God to move. And that’s our third step to break the bondage of anger. Choose the righteous response to anger. Listen to the words of the king in Matthew 18:35. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant just as I had mercy on you? And that’s exactly what God is saying to each and every one of us today. He’s saying since he has forgiven us and shown us much mercy, shouldn’t we also forgive others? Shouldn’t we show mercy to others who offended us? That’s why the Bible says in Colossians 3:13, « Make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends you. » Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. In other words, forgiveness means giving to others what God has freely given to me. You will never have to forgive someone more than God has forgiven you. We’ve all received much from God. We’ve all been saved and healed and forgiven and washed and delivered and helped and blessed and loved. When we were enemies of God, Jesus died for us. And just as he showed mercy to us, we also now must show mercy to others. That’s why God says in Ephesians 4:31-32, « Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. In our own strength, that seems impossible. But when you give your hurt to God, he comes in and heals you. So, I challenge you today, name your hurt, give it to God, and let him heal you. See, a lot of people, a lot of us make the mistake of thinking that the way to overcome bitterness is to pretend nothing happened. Oh, it’s okay. I’m not offended. I’m not hurt. But you have to admit it. If you try to minimize it, you’re not being honest. Don’t minimize the pain. Bring it to Calvary. In 1987, when my wife and I were living in the Delta of Nigeria, there was an incident that illustrates this truth. An Italian company brought a shipload of toxic waste from Europe and dumped it in a town called Koko in the Delta region just a few hours from where we lived. The company paid the village elders huge sums of money to let them bury the waste in their village. The waste was sealed up in metal drums and they buried it in the ground and no one thought anything of it. But the drums began to leak. The toxic substance inside was so foul it ate through the metal drums and seeped into the ground. And because the ground was in the swamp land of the delta, the toxic poison spread into the rivers. Fish began to die. Crops began to die. People started getting sick. Too late. It was discovered that the toxic waste had leaked out of the drums and was now poisoning the soil all around that area. It affected everything within hundreds of miles. And that’s an illustration of what anger does. You can’t seal up anger in your heart and bury it and hope it will just disappear. You can’t keep it hidden down deep in your heart and then just put a smile on your face and act happy. You have to deal with the root. Bring it up to the light. Give it to God. He’s the only one who can break the bondage of anger. That’s what’s needed. No matter how you personally react. See, we all react differently to anger. Some people express their anger. You never have to guess how they feel. You can see it on their face and hear it in their voice. An angry person who is expressive is like a volcano. But some people suppress their anger. They keep on smiling and talk softly and you think everything is okay, but inside they’re plotting how they’re going to stab you in the heart and burn your body with fire. And the fact is whether you express anger or suppress anger, it’s still anger. Jesus doesn’t want us to explode, but he doesn’t want us to pretend either. He’s not asking us to bottle up our emotions and ignore them. So, let me ask you today, do you explode when you get angry? Do you start shouting and screaming and breaking things or do you implode? Do you hold it in and keep it under control? You smile, but the anger is still there seething underneath. And if you let it festa, it eventually will leak out. The answer is not to spew your anger. And the answer is not to stew in your anger. The answer is to bring it to the savior and surrender your anger. You may have had things done to you so bad you’ve never told anyone what happened. You may have been violated, abused, raped, mistreated. You’ve never told anyone. You’ve just pushed it down and put a lid on it. But the toxic poison is going to leak out. You’ve got to get rid of it at once and for all. The only way to do that is through the blood of Jesus. That’s why Psalm 109 says, « For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain. Help me, oh Lord, my God. Save me because of your unfailing love. For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them. » David was full of pain just like many of you, but he cried out to God. He didn’t feel like it, but he came to God for help. And that’s the truth we need to follow today. You may not feel like coming to God. You may not feel like forgiving. You may not feel like letting go. But here’s the truth to pack up and take home with you. Feelings follow right choices. If you’ll do what God says, even when you don’t feel like it, then you will reap the reward of what God promises. And in the end, he will turn your heart around and restore you to joy and peace. When you choose to do the right thing, even when you don’t feel like it, you release the power of God to restore your soul. And in the end, he will bless you. And the feelings of peace and joy will fill your heart. That’s what David discovered in Psalm 71:20. He wrote, « Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again from the depths of the earth, you will again bring me up. And if you let go of your anger and give the offense to God, you can find a peace that passes all understanding. You’ll open a door to love that knows no limits. God will heal you and liberate you. He will elevate you to a new horizon of love and joy. That’s the promise of God for all who are hurting today. For Jeremiah 3:17 says, « I will give you back your health and heal your wounds, says the Lord. » That’s what God will do for you. For that’s what happened to Nancy Shore. On the night of August 18th, 205, Nancy Shore drove herself home from church. Her husband Frank had gone out to town and Nancy had attended a baptism. But when she drove into her compound, suddenly a man with a gun jumped out of the dark. He grabbed Nancy around the neck and held a gun to her head. Terrified, Nancy struggled to break free. But when she turned to face the gunman, he shot her in the head and fled away. Nancy fell to the ground unconscious. The bullet had gone through her left eye and traveled into her lung. But miraculously, Nancy survived. When she regained consciousness, she thought for sure she was going to die. But she heard God tell her, « Get up. » Even though she could barely breathe and blood was coming out of the wound, God gave her the strength to stagger into the house and call for help. Nancy was rushed to the hospital where the doctors worked frantically to save her life. She lost her left eye but eventually recovered from her wounds. But then something unbelievable happened to Nancy that made the first attack seemed like child’s play. As the police began to investigate the attack on Nancy, they came to a startling conclusion. The man who shot Nancy and left her for dead had been hired by someone to assassinate her. And when they caught the gunman, his confession was a greater blow to Nancy than the bullet that nearly killed her. For the gunman confessed he’d been hired by NY’s own husband, Frank, to kill her. For the last three years, Frank had been having an affair. He wanted Nancy out of his life. So, he hired a hitman to kill his own wife. Nancy was devastated. She loved Frank. They’d been married 22 years. they had three children. They attended church together. She thought Frank loved her. The betrayal was so deep and the hurt so hard. Nancy wasn’t sure she could survive. She’d give she could have given into anger and hate. She could have rejoiced when Frank went to prison. Yet in her hour of darkness, Jesus was there with Nancy Shore. Just as he had healed her physically, he now came to heal her emotionally. Nancy turned to Christ and he gave her the power to forgive. Listen to her words. I have forgiven him. Nancy says, « The Bible says that if we don’t forgive those who’ve harmed us, then we are unable to be forgiven. I cannot afford to not be forgiven by God. I cannot afford to not forgive him because I couldn’t live with bitterness. » Today, Frank is in prison and Nancy is moving on. She sings in the church choir and celebrates her life vigorously. I’m able to be thankful once again for how God has saved my life and the healing that’s happening in my children’s lives. It’s awesome. She says, « I’m excruciatingly happy. » Nancy Shore suffered it all. a physical attack that left her blind in one eye. A betrayal by a cheating husband and the fact that Frank had tried to have her killed. But today, NY’s heart is full of joy and peace. She has life because she has Jesus. He has broken the bondage of anger in her life. And the good news is this. Her story can be your story. No matter what anyone has done to you, Jesus can free you from the bondage of anger and bitterness. He can restore your peace and joy. That’s why he came. He came to break the bondage of sin. He came to break the bondage of fear. He came to break the bondage of anger. For Nancy Shore and for every single one of us here today, Jesus came to heal the betrayed, the broken, the bruised, and the bitter. He came to release and restore and renew and revive all those who have been wronged. He came to set free the hurting, the hopeless, the hated, and the harassed. He came to bring everyone, young and old, rich and poor, male and female, out of bondage and into freedom. He came for you so that he could be your bondage breaker. That’s what Jesus said when he came to us. He told us why he came and why God anointed him. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus said, « The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come. And to all who will receive him, to all who will turn to him, to all who will call upon him, he will set you free. He will break the bondage of anger in your life. Father, in the name of Jesus, we need you. Everyone watching and listening has been offended. We’ve all been hurt. Help us not to pretend, not to suppress it, not to express it, but to give it to you. We come with all our hurts, our wounds, all the betrayal, all the bruises, all the scars, all the offenses. We lay them at the foot of Calvary. We ask you to break the bondage of anger. Forgive us and give us your grace to forgive others. I pray for healing upon the hearts of everyone watching and listening today that you’ll come and minister light, life, love in us as you break the bondage of anger in Jesus name. Amen. 0.48 You may have had things done to you so bad you’ve never told anyone what happened. You may have been violated,
6.48 abused, raped, mistreated. You’ve never told anyone. You’ve just pushed it down
11.519 and put a lid on it. But the toxic poison is going to leak out. You’ve got to get rid of it at once and for all.
17.84 The only way to do that is through the blood of Jesus. That’s why Psalm 109 says, « For I am poor and needy and my
25.279 heart is full of pain. Help me, oh Lord, my God. save me because of your
30.32 unfailing love. For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who
37.12 condemn them.
42.399 Nancy Aosta from Houston, Texas, seemed to have a happy and normal life. She was
47.92 a wife, a mother of three children, and a medical doctor. Everything looked fine
53.039 on the surface, but there was something dark lurking behind the scenes. Nancy
58.399 had an unhappy marriage and anger was growing inside her heart. Her husband
63.84 Freddy was rarely home. Sometimes he stayed away for three or four days at a
69.04 time. And when he did come home, he would often just stop into the house, take a bath, get fresh clothes, and
75.84 leave again. Nancy suspected that Freddy was cheating on her with another woman.
82.08 So on June 15th, 2015, Nancy decided to follow Freddy and spy on him. When he
89.36 drove off, she got into her car and followed him. And sure enough, she caught Freddy picking up his mistress
97.2 and driving with her into town. Hey, when NY’s suspicions about Freddy’s
102.799 cheating were confirmed, something broke inside of her. Nancy became furious. She
109.36 wanted to make Freddy pay. She was going to get even with him. She was going to punish him. So Nancy drove faster and
117.36 faster as she chased Freddy and his side chick down the road. And then when she
122.719 caught up to him, she started to crash her car into his, ramming his car as the
128.56 two cars raced down the motorway. Nancy was smashing Freddy’s car while Freddy
133.76 tried to escape. But suddenly Nancy lost control of her
138.879 car. She left her lane and sped off into the other side of the road, right into
144.16 the oncoming traffic. Within seconds, she was hit headon by another driver and
151.12 Nancy Aosta died on the spot. Her anger led her to
156.48 attack her husband and his girlfriend, but in the end, it was Nancy who paid
161.76 the price. NY’s rival now sleeps in her bed, lives in her house, and controls
168.16 her children. And there’s a vital lesson for all of us in the tragic but true story of Nancy Aosta and her anger. It’s
176.4 natural for any one of us to feel angry when someone hurts us or causes us harm.
181.519 But when we fail to handle our anger properly, it ends up destroying us.
187.68 That’s why it’s so important for all of us to understand God’s path out of anger. For no matter what has been done
194.72 against you, you can find freedom from anger, when you look to the Lord to
199.92 deliver you. That’s the message in our sermon today. By God’s grace, we’re going to see how Jesus has come to break
206.48 the bondage of anger. But before we learn more, let’s bow our heads and pray. Almighty and everlasting Father,
213.599 we thank you that your love, your power, and your grace are greater than every
218.64 bondage. Jesus, we confess you are our bondage breaker and we come to you today
225.28 and ask you to break every bondage in our life. Break the bondage of fear and
230.4 of anger and of sin and deliver us that we might walk in freedom. We submit to
236.08 you now, Lord. We bind every work of the devil against us. Every lying voice of Satan, I command you to be silent. Every
243.68 spirit that would disturb or deceive or distract us, go in the name of Jesus.
249.04 and I loose the power of the Holy Spirit, the power to enlighten our hearts and minds and give us the grace
255.76 to follow you as we break free from anger. We thank you by faith in Jesus
262.32 name. And everybody said, « Amen. » I want to invite you to take a moment, join your faith with mine. Put your hand on
268.32 your chest and pray out loud after me. Lord Jesus, speak to my heart. Change my
274.479 life. manifest your glory in me in Jesus name. Amen. And amen. Well, hello
281.04 everyone. God richly bless you for joining me together today as we study God’s word. I’m so thankful to the Lord
288.16 uh for bringing us all into his presence to grow in our faith and to find freedom
294.72 in God’s word. For you see, no matter who you are or what problems you may be facing today, we serve an awesome God
302.639 who loved us. He came to deliver us from every bondage that would hold us captive. He is our bondage breaker. If
310.479 you believe it, say amen. That’s the truth we’ve been discovering in our current sermon series called bondage
317.36 breaker. Already we’ve seen that Jesus can deliver us from the bondage of sin and the bondage of fear. And today we
324.32 continue our series as we learn how Jesus can deliver us from the bondage of
329.52 anger as well. Now to help us break the bondage of anger, we’re going to study a parable that Jesus taught about a very
337.12 angry man. It’s found in the Gospel of St. Matthew chapter 18:es 22-35. Now
344.24 receive the word of the Lord. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven can be compared to
349.6 a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. In the process,
357.12 one of his detors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that
364.639 he be sold along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned to pay the debt. But the man fell down before
372.08 his master and begged him, « Please be patient with me. I will pay it all. »
377.36 Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his
382.479 debt. But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a
388.24 few thousand. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. His
394.319 fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. « Be patient with me and I will pay it, » he
400.16 pleaded. But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in
405.44 prison until he could pay the debt in full. When some of the other servants
410.56 saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened. Then the king called
416.639 in the man he’d forgiven and said, « You evil servant, I forgave you that
422.16 tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant just as I had mercy on
429.199 you? » Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he’d paid
435.52 his entire debt. That’s what my heavenly father will do to you if you refuse to
441.759 forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart. May the Lord bless the reading of his word to your hearts today
448.319 in Jesus’ name. And everybody said, « Amen. » Before we look at this parable
454.0 in detail, let’s understand why Jesus taught this story. The Bible says that one day Peter came to him and asked him
461.12 a question that was bothering him. He said, « Lord, how many times must I
466.56 forgive my brother when he sins against me? » Now, Peter didn’t ask the Lord
471.599 whether he had to forgive his brother. He knew he had to forgive. For we all know that God requires us to forgive
478.08 other people. But Peter was more concerned with the amount of forgiveness. If the offense was
484.4 particularly grievous or or was repeated over and over, did that give the Peter
489.84 the right to refuse to forgive and be angry? In response, Jesus told this
495.68 parable about this angry man. And in this story, he’s teaching Peter and he’s teaching all of us how to break the
503.199 bondage of anger. So, let’s look at the three steps we need to follow. And here’s your first step. Examine the root
510.16 of anger. Listen again to verse 28. When the man left the king, he went to a
515.2 fellow servant who owed him a few thousand. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. And the
522.56 fact is the angry man had a reason to be angry. The starting point of his anger
528.88 was the fact that he was owed money. He had a legitimate complaint. And it’s important that we all understand this
535.519 today. For you see, the path out of anger is not to deny that you’ve been
541.279 offended. You won’t break free from anger by pretending no one has wronged you. You have to examine the root of why
548.8 you feel angry and acknowledge uh when wrong was done to you. You may have a
553.92 legitimate reason to be angry. Someone did you wrong, someone betrayed you, someone cheated you, someone mistreated
560.24 you, you were hurt. But here’s what you need to understand. You don’t have a choice about whether or not other people
567.279 will do bad things against you. But you do have a choice regarding how you will
572.56 respond to the wrong done to you. Will you store it up in an angry root or will
579.44 you let it go and be free? For whether you like it or not, we’re all going to
585.04 be offended throughout life. None of us are exempt from being offended. Good people and bad people, rich people and
591.44 poor people, Americans, Nigerians, Ghanaians and Europeans all have wrongs done against them. Everybody has
598.48 offenses committed against them. Even Jesus had people treat him wrongly and commit offense against him. That’s why
605.68 Jesus himself said in Luke 17:1, « It is impossible that no offenses should
611.839 come. » The fact is people will disappoint you. Sometimes your expectation will exceed your experience
618.88 cuz we’re all imperfect people. And the fact is imperfect people hurt each
624.079 other, even those they love. So when your mate makes a mistake, you have two
629.6 options. You can rub it in or you can rub it out. You can’t avoid all
635.839 offenses. So you’ve got to decide today, how will I respond? Will I become bitter
642.16 or will I become better? It’s easy to go through life angry,
647.68 blaming others, blaming yourself, and even blaming God. But here’s the powerful truth that can set you free.
654.72 The root of your anger is not what people did to you. The root of your
659.76 anger is how you reacted to what was done to you. What people did to hurt you
666.32 was a seed. And a seed may be thrown on your heart, but it does not have to grow. If you do not water that seed, it
674.24 won’t become a root. And if you don’t nurture that seed, it won’t grow. See, you may be a product of your past, but
680.399 you don’t have to be a prisoner of your past. For the fact is, I’m not a prisoner. I am a powerhouse. That’s what
687.44 Paul discovered when he was literally in prison. Listen to his words uh to his spiritual son Timothy written from the
694.8 dark confines of a Roman prison in 2 Timothy 2:8-9. Always remember, somebody
701.04 say, always remember that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. This is the
706.32 good news I preach. From the dark dungeon of prison, Paul recalls the
711.76 powerful truth of the resurrection of Jesus. He tells Timothy, « Always remember, whether in prison or whether
718.72 free, whether in good times or whether in trials, for the truth is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
725.12 dead is our foundation. It’s what carries us through. For Jesus was beaten
730.72 and wounded and abused and killed, but he rose again. Death couldn’t keep him.
736.8 The grave couldn’t hold him. Pilate couldn’t stop him. The Jews couldn’t silence him. No matter what anyone did
743.2 to him, Jesus overcame. Hallelujah. And that means something for you and me
748.48 today. Jesus resurrection means that I am not bound uh by what was done to me.
754.8 I am freed by what Christ did for me. That’s why Paul goes on in verse 9 and
761.2 says, « Because I preach this good news, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God
769.279 cannot be chained. » Hallelujah. Paul was trained on the outside, but he had the
774.72 liberating power of God on the inside. Paul knew that the resurrected Christ
780.079 lived in him. And that meant that nothing could keep him down. Nothing could keep him in chains. And the same
786.88 thing is true for you and me today. See, I’ve got something inside of me that cannot be chained. It cannot be stopped.
794.72 I’ve got a power inside of me that brought Jesus Christ back from the dead. And that means that when I walk in the
802.24 power of God, there is nothing anyone can do to me that can hold me down.
807.6 That’s why I say with confidence, I am not a prisoner. I’m a powerhouse. I’m
813.44 not a prisoner to offense. I’m not a prisoner to circumstances. I’m not a prisoner to your opinion of me. I’m not
820.56 a prisoner to your hatred for me. Cuz they locked Paul up, but they couldn’t
826.0 shut him up. They bound him in chains, but they couldn’t bind his spirit. Because when you’re in Christ, you’re
832.639 not a prisoner of your circumstances. You are a powerhouse in the hands of
837.839 almighty God. Wherever you go, when you maintain the right perspective, you are
843.04 a powerhouse. You can detain a Christian on the outside, but you cannot detain
849.199 the destiny of a child of God. And when you believe and put your faith in Christ, not your circumstances, then God
856.72 can use you mightily no matter what anyone has done to you. That’s why Paul
861.92 wrote in Philippians 1:12, « And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything, » somebody say
869.519 everything, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread
875.36 the good news. In prison, Paul wrote epistles. In prison, he witnessed for
882.0 Christ. In prison, he fulfilled his purpose. Even in prison, he fulfilled a
887.44 powerful ministry that still continues to us today. So, here’s the truth you
894.32 need to pack up and take home with you. You can be pitiful or you can be powerful, but you can’t be both. God
902.639 will not release new opportunities as long as you’re holding on to old
907.839 offenses. But if you’ll get rid of that negative baggage, you’ll not only feel the
913.6 heaviness drop off of you, but you’ll step into the new things that God has
919.04 for you. That’s why Jesus said in Mark 11:25, when you are praying first,
924.88 everybody say first. First, forgive anyone you’re holding a grudge against
930.48 so that your father in heaven will forgive your sins, too. The opportunities available to you in
937.199 prayer will not be realized till you get rid of those offenses holding you back.
942.48 Being angry and upset over what people did to you will only keep you locked up
947.68 in chains. Your offender is out drinking and having kebabs. It’s time to drop it
954.639 and move forward. It’s time to let go and be free. Give it to God and God will
960.72 be your vindicator. See, you have to understand something today. Just because you have a reason to
966.48 be angry doesn’t make it right for you to react in anger. That’s what we can learn from the rioting that took place
973.519 in 2018 at theqaamer and Kruma University here in Ghana in Kumasi. The
978.72 students felt agrieved. They were angry at the way they were being treated by administrators and security personnel.
985.04 And the fact is there may indeed have been issues that needed to be addressed.
990.24 There may have been things that were done to the students that were wrong. The KNUSD students may have had a reason
996.72 to be angry, but it did not make it right for them to riot and destroy property. And when they rioted, what
1004.079 resulted? The government shut down the school. The students didn’t help themselves, they hurt themselves. The
1011.279 ones who suffered the most were the students who were unable to attend classes. For the fact is when you give
1018.0 vent to your anger, it hurts you more than it hurts anyone else. And that
1023.12 brings us to our second step to break the bondage of anger. Understand the
1029.039 results of anger. Listen to verse 34. The angry king sent the man to prison to
1035.199 be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. So the angry man thought he would
1040.799 take revenge and punish the man who owed him money. But in the end, it was the angry man who was punished. And that’s
1048.4 the result of anger. When you get angry and seek revenge, you don’t put your
1053.52 enemy in bondage. You put yourself in bondage. Proverbs 26:27 says, « If you
1059.28 set a trap for others, you will get caught in it yourself. » Tell your neighbor he’s talking about you. If you
1066.16 roll a boulder down on others, it will crush you instead. That’s the lesson we
1071.2 learned from what happened on Sunday, April 12th, 2015 in Milwaukee, USA.
1077.2 2-year-old Demani Terry was at a birthday party when he ran off from his friends. Before anyone could stop him,
1084.32 little Demani ran into the street. An older gentleman named Archie Brown was
1089.52 driving down the speed. He wasn’t speeding. He wasn’t reckless. He was just driving down the street when Demani
1095.2 ran right out in front of his car. Archie slammed on his brakes, but it was too late. Archie’s car, struck Demani,
1102.72 and killed him on the spot. Archie quickly stopped the car, got down, and tried to bring life to the boy. But
1110.08 Deman’s uncle became furious. He was angry at Archie for hitting Demani. And
1115.679 before anyone could stop him, Deman’s uncle pulled a gun and fired repeatedly,
1122.16 killing the driver, Archie Brown. But Archie Brown wasn’t the only one
1127.6 killed. Demani’s older brother, Rasheed, had run
1133.12 out into the street and held little Demani in his arms trying to comfort him. And when Deman’s uncle shot Archie
1141.28 Brown, one of the bullets hit the car, ricocheted off the car, and struck
1147.12 Rashid and killed him. So Demani Terry ran into the street and
1153.12 was hit by a car and killed. In revenge, Demani’s uncle shot the driver. A stray bullet struck Deman’s brother Rasheed
1159.84 and killed him. When the police came to arrest Demani’s uncle for shooting and killing two people, he committed
1167.36 suicide. Four people were dead. One died as a
1172.4 result of an accident. Three died as a result of anger.
1178.64 And in the end, the greatest damage was inflicted on the family of the man who was taking revenge. So here’s the truth
1185.12 you need to pack up and take home with you today. If you don’t deal with anger,
1190.4 anger will deal with you. Proverbs 27:4 says, « Anger is cruel and wrath is like
1197.6 a flood and anger brings a cruel result to your life. What starts as a drop can
1203.039 easily turn into a flood. When you give into anger, it picks up speed and starts
1208.16 to pour into your heart and mind. And in the end, you will pass that anger on to everyone around you. For the truth is,
1215.12 what doesn’t get healed gets handed down. You may think that taking revenge
1220.64 will bring you release. But in the end, it will bring you destruction. When you allow the root of anger to go deep into
1228.24 your life, it will spread to everybody around you, and many others will be
1233.28 affected. That’s why Hebrews 12:15 says, « Look after each other so that none of
1239.28 you fails uh to receive the grace of God. » Watch out that no poisonous root
1245.6 of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Anger is a seed that
1252.48 leads to a poisonous root of bitterness. And when you plant the seed of anger in your heart, it produces a poisonous root
1259.52 of bitterness that grows up. Anger opens the door to a whole world of evil. The
1265.84 poisonous root creates a poisonous fruit. That’s why Ephesians 4:27 says,
1271.679 « Anger gives a foothold to the devil. » You can bind Satan all you want. If
1278.559 you’ve got anger in your heart, the devil has a foothold in your life. No matter the 24-hour fasting, no matter
1285.44 the midnight prayer, no matter the speaking in tongues, when you have anger in your heart, you gave an open door to
1292.24 Satan. That’s the lesson we can learn from the tragic but true story of a man named
1297.6 Charles Roberts. On October 2nd, 2006, Charles Roberts walked into an Amish
1304.32 schoolhouse in Pennsylvania, USA. He was armed with three guns and a heart filled
1310.799 with anger and bitterness. He released some of the teachers and students and then he held the remaining 15 young
1318.64 ladies uh with their feet tied together. When the police arrived, Charles started
1324.32 shooting. He killed three children and then he killed himself.
1330.4 What could have led to Charles Roberts to commit such a horrific and random act of violence? No one who knew Charles
1337.6 Roberts could believe he was capable of such a thing. But Charles had a deep
1343.6 secret of anger that had been building inside his heart. In a letter he left for his wife, Charles said he was
1350.559 seeking revenge for something terrible that had happened in his life over 20
1357.039 years previously. When he was a child, Charles Roberts was angry at life, angry
1363.12 at people, and angry at God. And for 20 years, he allowed that anger to grow. It
1369.36 led to bitterness that spilled out in a tragedy that took his own life and the
1374.48 life of three innocent children. The tragedy at the Amish schoolhouse is a
1380.48 vivid true life example of the destructive nature of anger. It kills the soul. It can kill the body if left
1388.0 unchecked. Anger destroys everything in its path. Yet, surprisingly, this same
1393.84 story is also an example of the healing power of forgiveness. For you see, the
1400.48 families of the children who were murdered by Charles Roberts reacted to their loss in the exact opposite way
1408.0 that Charles had reacted to his own hurt. Rather than becoming bitter, the
1413.28 families of the innocent children he killed decided to forgive. The families
1419.2 of the girls he killed attended his funeral and provided financial support
1425.12 to his widow rather than responding with anger. They responded with the love of
1431.84 God. And that’s the lesson we all need to learn from this story. The fact is when faced with offenses and hurts and
1439.12 betrayals, you have a choice. You can let anger result in death, or you can
1444.72 let love result in forgiveness. You can allow the hurt and hatred to fester and
1450.4 grow until it takes over your life and destroys you. Or you can choose to overcome evil with good. You can choose
1456.88 to turn off fence into an opportunity for God to move. And that’s our third
1462.72 step to break the bondage of anger. Choose the righteous response to anger.
1468.88 Listen to the words of the king in Matthew 18:35. Shouldn’t you have mercy
1474.24 on your fellow servant just as I had mercy on you? And that’s exactly what God is saying to each and every one of
1480.72 us today. He’s saying since he has forgiven us and shown us much mercy,
1486.0 shouldn’t we also forgive others? Shouldn’t we show mercy to others who offended us? That’s why the Bible says
1491.919 in Colossians 3:13, « Make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone
1498.32 who offends you. » Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
1504.64 In other words, forgiveness means giving to others what God has freely given to
1510.24 me. You will never have to forgive someone more than God has forgiven you.
1516.96 We’ve all received much from God. We’ve all been saved and healed and forgiven
1522.08 and washed and delivered and helped and blessed and loved. When we were enemies of God, Jesus died for us. And just as
1529.6 he showed mercy to us, we also now must show mercy to others. That’s why God
1535.2 says in Ephesians 4:31-32, « Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger,
1541.76 harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind
1548.159 to each other, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ
1555.52 has forgiven you. In our own strength, that seems impossible. But when you give
1561.44 your hurt to God, he comes in and heals you. So, I challenge you today, name
1566.88 your hurt, give it to God, and let him heal you. See, a lot of people, a lot of
1571.919 us make the mistake of thinking that the way to overcome bitterness is to pretend nothing happened. Oh, it’s okay. I’m not
1578.559 offended. I’m not hurt. But you have to admit it. If you try to minimize it, you’re not being honest. Don’t minimize
1584.64 the pain. Bring it to Calvary. In 1987, when my wife and I were living in the
1590.48 Delta of Nigeria, there was an incident that illustrates this truth. An Italian
1595.679 company brought a shipload of toxic waste from Europe and dumped it in a
1600.799 town called Koko in the Delta region just a few hours from where we lived. The company paid the village elders huge
1608.4 sums of money to let them bury the waste in their village. The waste was sealed up in metal drums and they buried it in
1615.36 the ground and no one thought anything of it. But the drums began to leak. The
1621.12 toxic substance inside was so foul it ate through the metal drums and seeped
1626.48 into the ground. And because the ground was in the swamp land of the delta, the toxic poison spread into the rivers.
1633.2 Fish began to die. Crops began to die. People started getting sick. Too late.
1638.88 It was discovered that the toxic waste had leaked out of the drums and was now poisoning the soil all around that area.
1646.32 It affected everything within hundreds of miles. And that’s an illustration of what anger does. You can’t seal up anger
1654.72 in your heart and bury it and hope it will just disappear. You can’t keep it hidden down deep in your heart and then
1661.52 just put a smile on your face and act happy. You have to deal with the root. Bring it up to the light. Give it to
1667.44 God. He’s the only one who can break the bondage of anger. That’s what’s needed. No matter how you personally react. See,
1674.96 we all react differently to anger. Some people express their anger. You never
1680.0 have to guess how they feel. You can see it on their face and hear it in their voice. An angry person who is expressive
1686.64 is like a volcano. But some people suppress their anger. They keep on
1692.0 smiling and talk softly and you think everything is okay, but inside they’re
1697.039 plotting how they’re going to stab you in the heart and burn your body with fire. And the fact is whether you
1703.039 express anger or suppress anger, it’s still anger. Jesus doesn’t want us to
1709.279 explode, but he doesn’t want us to pretend either. He’s not asking us to bottle up our emotions and ignore them.
1716.48 So, let me ask you today, do you explode when you get angry? Do you start shouting and screaming and breaking
1723.12 things or do you implode? Do you hold it in and keep it under control? You smile,
1730.0 but the anger is still there seething underneath. And if you let it festa, it eventually will leak out. The answer is
1739.12 not to spew your anger. And the answer is not to stew in your anger. The answer
1745.039 is to bring it to the savior and surrender your anger. You may have had
1750.48 things done to you so bad you’ve never told anyone what happened. You may have been violated, abused, raped,
1757.039 mistreated. You’ve never told anyone. You’ve just pushed it down and put a lid on it. But the toxic poison is going to
1763.76 leak out. You’ve got to get rid of it at once and for all. The only way to do that is through the blood of Jesus.
1769.84 That’s why Psalm 109 says, « For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of
1775.6 pain. Help me, oh Lord, my God. Save me because of your unfailing love. For he
1781.279 stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them. »
1787.84 David was full of pain just like many of you, but he cried out to God. He didn’t
1794.96 feel like it, but he came to God for help. And that’s the truth we need to follow today. You may not feel like
1800.799 coming to God. You may not feel like forgiving. You may not feel like letting go. But here’s the truth to pack up and
1807.52 take home with you. Feelings follow right choices. If you’ll do what God says, even when you don’t feel like it,
1815.12 then you will reap the reward of what God promises. And in the end, he will
1820.48 turn your heart around and restore you to joy and peace. When you choose to do
1826.32 the right thing, even when you don’t feel like it, you release the power of God to restore your soul. And in the
1833.679 end, he will bless you. And the feelings of peace and joy will fill your heart.
1840.08 That’s what David discovered in Psalm 71:20. He wrote, « Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you
1848.32 will restore my life again from the depths of the earth, you will again
1853.36 bring me up. And if you let go of your anger and give the offense to God, you
1858.48 can find a peace that passes all understanding. You’ll open a door to love that knows no limits. God will heal
1865.44 you and liberate you. He will elevate you to a new horizon of love and joy.
1870.48 That’s the promise of God for all who are hurting today. For Jeremiah 3:17 says, « I will give you back your health
1878.159 and heal your wounds, says the Lord. » That’s what God will do for you. For
1883.279 that’s what happened to Nancy Shore. On the night of August 18th, 205, Nancy
1890.159 Shore drove herself home from church. Her husband Frank had gone out to town and Nancy had attended a baptism. But
1897.44 when she drove into her compound, suddenly a man with a gun jumped out of the dark. He grabbed Nancy around the
1904.24 neck and held a gun to her head. Terrified, Nancy struggled to break
1909.519 free. But when she turned to face the gunman, he shot her in the head and fled
1914.799 away. Nancy fell to the ground unconscious. The bullet had gone through
1920.0 her left eye and traveled into her lung. But miraculously, Nancy survived. When
1925.2 she regained consciousness, she thought for sure she was going to die. But she heard God tell her, « Get up. » Even
1931.6 though she could barely breathe and blood was coming out of the wound, God gave her the strength to stagger into
1937.519 the house and call for help. Nancy was rushed to the hospital where the doctors
1942.64 worked frantically to save her life. She lost her left eye but eventually
1947.679 recovered from her wounds. But then something unbelievable happened to Nancy that made the first attack
1955.44 seemed like child’s play. As the police began to investigate the attack on
1960.48 Nancy, they came to a startling conclusion. The man who shot Nancy and
1965.76 left her for dead had been hired by someone to assassinate her. And when
1970.96 they caught the gunman, his confession was a greater blow to Nancy than the bullet that nearly killed her. For the
1977.76 gunman confessed he’d been hired by NY’s own husband, Frank, to kill her.
1986.32 For the last three years, Frank had been having an affair. He wanted Nancy out of his life. So, he hired a hitman to kill
1993.76 his own wife. Nancy was devastated. She loved Frank. They’d been married 22
1999.12 years. they had three children. They attended church together. She thought Frank loved her. The betrayal was so
2005.679 deep and the hurt so hard. Nancy wasn’t sure she could survive. She’d give she
2011.36 could have given into anger and hate. She could have rejoiced when Frank went to prison. Yet in her hour of darkness,
2018.64 Jesus was there with Nancy Shore. Just as he had healed her physically, he now
2024.0 came to heal her emotionally. Nancy turned to Christ and he gave her the
2030.24 power to forgive. Listen to her words. I have forgiven him. Nancy says, « The
2036.88 Bible says that if we don’t forgive those who’ve harmed us, then we are unable to be forgiven. I cannot afford
2042.88 to not be forgiven by God. I cannot afford to not forgive him because I
2048.639 couldn’t live with bitterness. » Today, Frank is in prison and Nancy is
2053.839 moving on. She sings in the church choir and celebrates her life vigorously. I’m
2059.679 able to be thankful once again for how God has saved my life and the healing
2065.599 that’s happening in my children’s lives. It’s awesome. She says, « I’m
2071.04 excruciatingly happy. » Nancy Shore suffered it all. a physical
2076.96 attack that left her blind in one eye. A betrayal by a cheating husband and the
2082.159 fact that Frank had tried to have her killed. But today, NY’s heart is full of
2087.52 joy and peace. She has life because she has Jesus. He has broken the bondage of
2093.679 anger in her life. And the good news is this. Her story can be your story. No
2098.8 matter what anyone has done to you, Jesus can free you from the bondage of
2103.839 anger and bitterness. He can restore your peace and joy. That’s why he came.
2109.04 He came to break the bondage of sin. He came to break the bondage of fear. He came to break the bondage of anger. For
2115.68 Nancy Shore and for every single one of us here today, Jesus came to heal the
2121.52 betrayed, the broken, the bruised, and the bitter. He came to release and restore and renew and revive all those
2129.119 who have been wronged. He came to set free the hurting, the hopeless, the
2135.04 hated, and the harassed. He came to bring everyone, young and old, rich and poor, male and female, out of bondage
2142.24 and into freedom. He came for you so that he could be your bondage breaker.
2150.32 That’s what Jesus said when he came to us. He told us why he came and why God anointed him. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus
2157.599 said, « The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He sent me to proclaim
2164.24 that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the
2170.88 Lord’s favor has come. And to all who will receive him, to all who will turn
2176.24 to him, to all who will call upon him, he will set you free. He will break the
2182.56 bondage of anger in your life.
2187.599 Father, in the name of Jesus, we need you. Everyone watching and listening has
2193.119 been offended. We’ve all been hurt. Help us not to pretend, not to suppress
2200.64 it, not to express it, but to give it to you. We come with all our hurts, our
2206.8 wounds, all the betrayal, all the bruises, all the scars, all the
2211.92 offenses. We lay them at the foot of Calvary. We ask you to break the bondage
2218.24 of anger. Forgive us and give us your grace to forgive others. I pray for
2224.8 healing upon the hearts of everyone watching and listening today that you’ll
2230.079 come and minister light, life, love in us as you break the bondage of anger in
2239.359 Jesus name. Amen. Pastor Richard C. Whitam’s sermons are transforming lives around the world.
